The UK charging landscape in 2026

The UK now has over 60,000 public charging points, with rapid and ultra-rapid chargers increasingly common on motorways and in urban areas. The network is far from perfect — reliability remains an issue with some operators — but for most EV owners, public charging is a backup rather than a primary solution.

Home charging: the foundation of EV ownership

Around 80% of EV charging happens at home overnight. If you have off-street parking, a home wallbox is the single most important investment you can make alongside your EV. A 7kW wallbox will charge most EVs from empty to full overnight, and installation typically costs £800–£1,200 including the unit.

The government's EV chargepoint grant covers up to £350 towards home charger installation for eligible properties.

Understanding charging speeds

Charging speed is measured in kilowatts (kW). The higher the number, the faster the charge. A standard 3-pin plug delivers around 2.3kW — fine for a top-up but slow for a full charge. A home wallbox delivers 7kW. Public rapid chargers typically offer 50–150kW. Ultra-rapid chargers (350kW+) can add 100 miles in under 10 minutes on compatible vehicles.

Public charging networks

The main public charging networks in the UK include Osprey, Pod Point, BP Pulse, Gridserve, and Osprey. Tesla's Supercharger network — now open to non-Tesla vehicles — remains the most reliable and easiest to use.

Most networks require an app or RFID card to activate chargers, though new regulations require contactless payment on all new public chargers from 2024 onwards.

Tips for stress-free public charging

Planning ahead makes public charging straightforward. Apps like Zap-Map show real-time charger availability and reliability ratings. Always have a backup charger location in mind, and aim to arrive at rapid chargers with at least 10% battery remaining.

Charging to 80% is faster than charging from 80–100% due to how lithium batteries work — for long journeys, multiple shorter stops are often faster than one long one.
